These beautiful sunflowers were given out at the celebration of Chelsea King’s life in 2010 at Poway High School. Chelsea was a classmate of my son’s who was murdered while jogging at a lake near our home in San Diego. Everyone attending the celebration was handed a sunflower wrapped with a blue ribbon when they entered the stadium for the service. My two sons, my partner and I each got one and placed them in a vase on our coffee table back home with a candle lit for Chelsea. Now, two years later, I still think of Chelsea every time I see a sunflower. This extraordinary young woman lives on in our hearts of all who knew her and knew of her and in every sunflower that blooms.

  1. Chelsea’s life shined a light on the work that needs to be done in our justice system to halt predators from getting out — the first time. What a beautiful tribute to her.

  2. I love the idea of the sunflowers to celebrate a life, especially one so young as Chelsea King’s. Very fitting that you brought them home this way; thanks for sharing.

  3. What a beautiful idea to celebrate Chelsea’s life wife with sunflowers! Do the blue ribbons have a specific meaning?
